Review: Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc Player

Toshiba and HD DVD have been leading the price war for some time and Toshiba’s newest entry-level model, the HD-A3, should be in stores selling for $299 or less by the time you read this. Sony and the other manufacturers in the Blu-ray Disc (BD) camp have been slower to come down in price, but the BDP-S300 is Sony’s first dedicated BD player to list for $499—the same price as their BD-based Playstation 3 (PS3). Going in to this review, one question seemed obvious. How does the BDP-S300 compare to a PS3 if one is looking for an “affordable” Blu-ray player?
